About Us

Founder’s Statement

Let’s be honest: the remodeling industry has a trust problem.

For years, I’ve watched homeowners approach their dream projects with a sense of dread. They’ve heard the horror stories of contractors who disappear, hidden costs that balloon the budget, and “quality” work that doesn’t stand the test of time. I’ve always believed that homeowners deserve better.

I started Scoma Construction Services because I wanted to do things differently. I realized that to fix the “contractor reputation,” we had to do more than just swing hammers. If we truly wanted to help people turn a house into their home, we had to change the entire experience.

I built this company on the belief that you should never feel like a spectator in your own home renovation. You deserve to understand the “why” behind every decision and the “how” behind every process. That is why we lead with education and transparency. We don’t just want to build your porch, kitchen, or bathroom. We want to give you the peace of mind that comes from knowing the job is being done right.

When we developed our SCOMA Pillars (Standards, Clarity, Organization, Mastery, and Advocacy), it wasn’t just a marketing exercise. It was a promise. It’s our way of ensuring that your project is a source of excitement, not anxiety.

Thank you for considering us to be a part of your home’s story. We don’t take that trust lightly.

About Us

The Team

Matt Howard - Owner

Matt has been around construction his entire life. As a kid, he helped his dad and granddad with projects around the house, shop builds, and porch builds. In college, he started framing houses, and from there went on to work as a superintendent for a home builder and in commercial construction as a construction coordinator.

During over 20 years of being professionally involved in construction, Matt learned just as much from the jobs that were done wrong as the ones that were done right. Too many contractors cut corners, and too many homeowners were left feeling frustrated. He knew there had to be a better way to treat people right and help them fix what they didn't like about their homes.

In 2010, he started Scoma Construction Services with a simple mission: turn houses into homes. Over 15 years later, that mission hasn't changed. Matt and his team are still focused on trust, quality craftsmanship, and helping Raleigh homeowners bring their vision to life.

When he's not working, you can find Matt spending time with his wife and son, indoor rock climbing, or out on a trail somewhere. Hiking, camping, and all things outdoors keep him recharged and ready for the next project.

David Funderburk - Production Manager

David, a 5th generation North Carolina tradesman, has over 30 years of professional experience in the construction industry, specializing in framing, high-end renovation and finish work. He began his career in 1994 with a local commercial building company and moved into residential construction shortly thereafter. Over the years David has continued to work in both fields as well as historic preservation and specialty projects for clients across the east coast.

David’s favorite project was the careful deconstruction of the historic 1780’s Allen Family home in Louisburg, NC, where much of the home was restored, transported piece by piece, and rebuilt in its new location in Buggs Island, Virginia. It’s projects like this that have developed David’s high standards, attention to detail, and mastery of his craft. It is David’s goal that his clients have a clear understanding of their project’s order of operations and that they feel confident in his ability to successfully bring their vision to Life.

When David is not on the job you can find him volunteering as a builder for disaster relief or other building projects with various world mission organizations. Or spending time on his little homestead with his wife of over 30 years and their six children.
